Prostate Screening

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test

The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer.

It measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland located below the bladder in males.

While PSA is mostly found in semen (also produced in the prostate), small amounts normally circulate in the blood.

The PSA test can detect elevated levels of PSA, which may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. However, other conditions—such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate—can also cause PSA levels to rise.

Why PSA Screening Matters

Prostate cancer is common and remains a leading cause of cancer-related death in men. Early detection through screening is a valuable tool to ensure timely and appropriate treatment.
